A MLS jersey should sit comfortably across the shoulders with room to move — not tight like a compression shirt, not baggy like a poncho. Two things determine which size that is for you: the cut, and what you plan to wear underneath.

Each product page lists the actual chest measurement in inches. If you are between two sizes, the measurement is more reliable than the letter.

The single biggest killer of a MLS jersey is heat. Hot washes and tumble dryers break down the adhesive behind the crest and the nameset, which is why you see shirts with peeling letters after one season.

• Wash cold — 30 °C is plenty
• Inside out, always, to protect the print
• No fabric softener; it ruins the wicking finish
• Air dry flat or on a hanger

For a shirt with a nameset, wash it in a pillowcase. The small amount of friction it prevents is what keeps the letters attached.

Most people wear a MLS shirt two ways — to ground on a matchday, or as a regular layer the rest of the week. Both work, but they want different things from the fit.

For the ground, wear it as it comes. For everyday, size up once so it sits loosely over a tee rather than clinging.

Three things decide whether a MLS jersey is worth the money: the fabric weight, whether the lettering is printed or stitched, and how close the cut is to what the players wear.
